Last year i tried to meditate for the first time and gave up after what seemed like ten minutes but i'm sure it was more like two lol. I found it incredibly hard to switch off. The whole time i was trying to meditate, i was thinking about 101 other things i could be doing- i really lacked the patience for it. Fast forward a week later. My second attempt. I was not going to be defeated this time, because deep down i knew it was something i needed to do, i was tired of having fifty tabs open in mind and feeling overwhelmed by stress and so, i sat my ass down until i no longer felt uncomfortable. Taking baby steps allowed me to eventually achieve my then goal of doing a 30 minute meditation.
The first thing that became apparent to me, was how clear my mind became. It felt like when you free up space on your hard drive and your laptop starts running a lot more smoothly lol no longer did i feel bogged down and drained. Not only that, i also noticed i how it had become much easier to handle my emotions, i was less irritated by unfavourable circumstances and dealt with them a lot better. I feel a lot more peaceful and happier since embarking on this mindfulness journey.
When first starting out, don't think that anything less than half an hour is ineffective. It's not a race, take your time and slowly but surely you will be able to withstand a lengthy duration. You'll start to notice a difference in yourself with even as little as ten minutes if you're consistent with it.
Here are 5 reasons why you should start meditating:
1. Banishes burnout
2. Boosts memory
3. Reduces stress
4. Can help treat insomnia
5. Relieves headaches
Meditating first thing in the morning really sets the tone for the day. However, this doesn't mean that unfavourable circumstance won't arise, it just means you will be able to handle them a lot better. If you're having trouble sleeping, you may want to try this before retiring to bed. You'll wake up from the deepest slumber, feeling like a brand new person, ready to take on the day ahead.
