Back in 2015, I suffered from burnout. An experience I know I'll never forget, it was definitely a big wake up call to myself and how unbalanced my life was. I was interning and juggling multiple projects...acting like I was 5 people in 1. Forfeiting sleep and play time: work, work, work, work *Rihanna's voice* I was behaving more like a robot and less like a human. Because of that experience, I've become very mindful of when I'm feeling drained and will ease up as a preventative measure. Burnout is physical and emotional exhaustion and not something to be taken lightly because it's a gradual process, the signs are subtle at first and get worse as time goes on. Below are 10 signs of burnout for those of you that are not familiar with it:
- Lowered immunity- getting ill frequently
- Loss of appetite
- Chronic fatigue
- Impaired concentration and attention
- Loss of enjoyment
- Constantly feeling like there's never enough time
Burn out is not to be confused with stress, however, short-term stress can contribute to this. One thing you should be aware of is that the following personality traits can contribute to burnout: over-achievers, perfectionists, competitive and control freaks- Dig deep and get to the root of where this stems from, it could well possibly be from childhood.
3 ways to prevent burnout:
Seek balance in life. We all know the saying all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, right? Don't be like Jack, guys he's definitely on his way to burnout. Play time is just as important as work. Find time to do things that make your heart smile. Remember life is for living.
Ask for help. Be honest with yourself when it comes to your workload, learn to know how much you can handle and do not take on more than that. If possible try and delegate tasks to others so you can give your 100% to what is already on your plate.
Learn to manage time effectively. Work smarter, not harder by prioritizing your work in terms of what is urgent to non-urgent. You can find out more tips about this in my how to have a productive day blog post.
